Ray Milland, original name Reginald Truscott-Jones, (born Jan. 3, 1907, Neath, Glamorganshire, Wales—died March 10, 1986, Torrance, Calif., U.S.), Welsh-born American actor. Milland made his film debut in 1929 and moved to Hollywood in 1930. He was the debonair romantic leading man in many movies of the 1930s and ’40s. He won acclaim for his performance as an alcoholic writer in The Lost Weekend (1945, Academy Award) and also played dramatic parts in The Big Clock (1948), Something to Live For (1952), and Dial M for Murder (1954). In his later years he generally played only minor roles. He directed several movies in the 1950s and early ’60s.
